My little Maggie Biscuits!

Yes my blog is Inspired by Cake.....but it has been hijack by a sweet little treat this month! While trying out some new decorating techniques on cookies, I thought there is no reason why these same techniques couldn't crossover to cakes. So stay tune for a new blog post on this exact topic, but getting back to the point of this post - My experiment this week was edible paints!


I have been hearing how amazing the Edible Paints from Sweet Sticks (Melbourne, Australia) were, so I purchased an assortment of colours and decided to have a play. As some of you know painting with Gel Colours can sometimes be a little difficult, the coverage isn't always great and they take forever to dry. Well there is now a fantastic edible paint on the market that is a dream to work with. I wanted to try out the black first because it is usually tricky to get a good cover with.




My week had been pretty busy and I hadn't had a chance to stop, so my gorgeous westie Maggie had been following me around with those big sweet eyes!!! So much said in one look and voilĂ  the inspiration for my hand painted biscuits.



I wanted to actually show you how beautiful these paints were to work with so I have made a small video.

 




There is a huge range of colours and they are just as fantastic to work with, I did have a play with these Gorilla Biscuits. I wanted a very artistic looking finish on these, after all if your going to the trouble of painting it should look it a little sweet canvas.....don't you think? 



If you get the chance to try some of the Edible Paints by Sweet Sticks I really recommend it after all you are now only limited by your imagination....not by your paints!

Bitten by the Bickie!

I recently took a class with Julia Day from Miss Biscuit (based in Melbourne) and yes I have been bitten by the bickie bug! These cute plain little sweet canvases that you can turn into edible treats with a few colours and some imagination, well they have stolen my heart!



I have always wanted to try decorating biscuits but with cakes taking up a good portion of my time, I have never had the chance until recently. It's true.....unless you book it in, it will never happen.

Julia was a fantastic teacher and made everything seem so easy. She showed us how to make her special biscuit recipe (this can be found on her website http://www.missbiscuit.com.au/product-category/recipes/ ) and then went through the basic techniques of piping different designs onto the biscuits.




It was the most fun I have had in ages and as each biscuit was decorated I could feel the addiction start.....they are just too darn cute!


 
 By the end of the day I was getting the hang of the amount of icing to place on the biscuit, how to work fast but carefully and we ended up with such a cute selection of biscuits to take home.


Now two weeks later, I have tried to recreate the bickie magic at home. My first time cooking the recipe and making the royal icing. Everything was going according to plan until I rushed colouring the icing and put too many air bubbles in the royal (note to self, DON'T rush). Although even with the air bubbles, I was still really happy with my first attempt.

Meeting the Wildly Creative Katherine Sabbath!

This weekend I spent the most amazing time in the Blue Mountains, NSW. No I wasn't hiking or taking in the autumn scenic beauty. I was inside all weekend with a group of like minded cakers, about to meet some of the industries most inspiring!!!


Like most idols, you never know if they are going to live up to your fantasy of them. After all, they are people like you and me. So walking into a class with Katherine Sabbath, someone so creative and talented was exciting and one of my cake highlights so far!!



Then to find out this amazing cake creator was as humble as she is talented.....well what more can I say! Not only was she one of the nicest people you could ever meet, but she was so generous with her knowledge of technique and baking. In an industry that at times can be very cut throat, Katherine or Kat as she prefers to be called was a breath of fresh air.

From the bold flower apron to the rainbow of colours in chocolate and buttercream, add an emphasis on blending flavours and this is one wildly creative lady.


Katherine Sabbath won the internet with well over 100,000 followers before she'd taken a single baking class, and I'm not ashamed to say she won me over before I finished her Unicorn Rainbow Cake.



If you ever have the opportunity to take a class with this gorgeous lady, I suggest you jump at the chance!!! Not only will you walk away with a beautiful cake, but you will have had the best time creating it.

Looking for my Signature Style!

Have you all heard the saying - "Jack of all trades, Master of none"?
Well I've been doing some thinking of late and looking at my cakes, I seem to fall into that category.

Do you need to have a signature style? If you look at all the successful decorators out there it seems the answer is a great, big, HUGE yes!

Ok, so then what is a signature style? It's the look a cake has which instantly makes people think of you!

When I went back through the images of my cakes, they are all clean neat designs but I range from sugar flowers to novelty to traditional to working with royal. I love all styles of decorating, but the time has come to find my style. Something that will make me stand out from the rest.

 
 

 



















So where does one start when trying to narrow down the field....


1. Definition equals quality. You want a clear, idea of what it is you are creating. Not a wishy-washy concept that is a little bit of everything and therefore not really anything.


2. Dig deep into what it is you love about decorating, this will not only help you refine your style, but also improve your own creative awareness and confidence.


3. I think choose the one thing about decorating that you love above all others as a starting point.


For me that is piping!!! I love the intricate designs I can create with my piping tube. How delicate the filigree shards can be and how you can do just about anything in royal. Now this doesn't mean I'm going to totally give up on other styles.....it just means that piping will feature on my cakes a lot more now. Yes that's right, I'm going to be the piping girl!!!






















I hope you follow the path I'm about to take with my NEW style. Even better......if you don't have a signature style, set off on your own path and start exploring! This turn in the road is something I'm very excited to start!

Welcome to Inspired by Cake!


Hi to all you lovely cakers,

Inspired by Cake is not new to the blogger world, I have been hibernating! However with a re-vamp of the site and business, it is time to make a splash back into the caking world!

So where does one start when you are creating a Blog from square one. Lets face it I'm asking complete strangers to take an interest in my life and passion, puts a little pressure on this to be amazing......or at least entertaining!

Ok, a little background on myself and how I become interested in cakes might be the best way to start. My name is Vanessa Wardle, I was a Graphic Designer - BC (before children). I loved to bake, but never really had the time. For years I had always wanted to explore cake decorating and it wasn't until I had children that the love affair with sugar began.

After seven years of creating wonderful cakes for my clients, I'm taking the plunge into the online world of teaching and sharing through tutorials, social media and this blog. I can't wait to see where this new turn in my business takes me....I hope you all come along and share the ride!!!
